OUR ITALIAN HOLIDAY

20th-27th April 2004

THE AMALFI COAST

The first day we had to be at Gatwick at 5am,which meant that we had to be up at 3am and the taxi picking us up would collect us at 4am. The plane a 737 type 300 actually took off at 6.45am

Our holiday hotel was in a small town named Minori just east of Amalfi, to get there we flew into Naples and a coach was waiting for us to take us to the hotel. We had approximately 40 kilometres go and right over the mountains. We were almost at the mountain top when we ran into thick fog and those who have been to the Italian mountains know how hairy it is with huge drops and a foot high wall to stop you going over.

We eventually reached Hotel Settebello in Minori ,it was not to big, only 30 bedrooms, very clean and served excellent food. We sorted ourselves out and decided to have a look at the town and get a cup of coffee. We were quite impressed , it was a smart place but not very big.

The next day we decided to walk over the mountain to the next town to the east , called Majori which was quite a climb but well worth it, climbing through acres and acres of lemon trees, and the views from the top was fantastic. Majori was quite a bit bigger than Minori and was more of a market town with open fronted shops and people seemed to be bargaining with shopkeepers. It had a lovely beach and promenade. We spent quite a bit of time here wandering round the shops and seafront.

The day we went to Capri, again was a lovely day, we went to Amalfi in a coach to get the boat, it was about a 90 minute journey and the boat stayed in close to the shore so we could see the scenery. Capri is a very nice place but we wish we could have seen it 20 years ago as it is now so commercialised. We went up on the chair lift 2000 feet and the view from there was stunning. The guide did show us where our "Gracie" lived. The shopping centre was very up market so we never spent many Euros.

Our next day out was to Pompei, this was a very interesting day as I am not very interested in history, but the guide was very good and made it seem to be alive, and we could have stayed a lot longer. The old buildings were very well preserved and we actually saw the first "McDonalds" fast food outlet which was outside the bath house. It was a flat counter with holes in it, in which they put hot ash in the holes and cooked the food after they they had had there bath. The volcano at Mount Vesuvius is very near to Pompei and this can be seen clearly .

Sorrento was another trip that we did and this is quite a large town, The coach driver had an argument with local police when we arrived as he stopped the coach to let us off in a side street off the main road and it held up a little traffic. The Italians go mad if they are held up even for a few seconds and they called in the law. The driver and the police had a few loud words which ended in a 40Euro fine. Sorrento itself is a very picturesque place with lovely old buildings with very narrow side streets and loads of old shops. They also make a very nice ice cream which we had to sample.

The prettiest town of all we visited was Ravello, To get there we walked up approx 2000 steps ,but it was well worth the effort for the scenery, and we took lots of photos.

We had a very enjoyable holiday arranged by Page & Moy . We did a lot of walking and a lot of sight seeing, and we would recommend this to anyone.
